Began coaching career volunteering with youth league in Eldorado while in High School. In high school played for two hall of fame coaches.
Took an assistant position at Southeastern Illinois College. During the time at SIC, the 1989-1990 team qualified for the National Tournament losing in the second round to the top ranked team in the nation. Multiple players left SIC during this time for Division I programs, including Murray State, Northeastern IL, University of Evansville, SEMO, University of Dayton and Austin Peay.
Coach Helton began the 1992-1993 season as the head coach at Goreville High School. During his 28 years the blackcats won 512 games, reached the Elite 8 five times, the Sweet 16 ten times, won 16 conference championships and 11 regional titles.
Nine different Blackcats earned All-State honors during his tenure at Goreville. Coach Helton was named the IBCA district 21 coach of the year 7 times, the SICA Coach of the Year 6 times.
He was selected to the IBCA Hall of Fame in 2015, the SICA Hall of Fame in 2020
Coach Helton spent the 2021-2022 season as a volunteer assistant at John A. Logan college.
